Testimonies from Orissa

Junas Nayak

I am Junas Nayak from Tikabali, Kandhamal.

During the anti-Christian violence of August 2008, people belonging to the RSS rushed into my house. We ran out to save our lives but they looted our house and took away everything they got hold of, our furniture and expensive jewellery etc.

Then they chased us and started shooting at us. I saw my brother being killed right in front of me. I was shot at with at least 13 bullets.

However, miraculously I remained alive. I had no money for treatment, and so I went around carrying those bullets in my body for some days. I came to know about the ministry of Open Doors in a relief camp in Rudangia, where it was providing relief material. Open Doors paid heed to my request, and helped me to get admitted into Christian Hospital, Berhampur.

Manini Digal

Manini is a 17 years old girl from Barkhama village, Kandhamal.

Her family survives on manual labor. During the riots, Manini was caught by the extremists. They tore her clothes, stripped her and attempted to rape her. Finally they they poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.

Around fifty percent of her body, except her face and hand were burnt. She was brought in a critical condition to the District Hospital, Phulbani. After primary aid, four days later, she was shifted to the Medical hospital in Berhampur, which is the nearest big town. Open Doors paid for her full medical expenses as she recovered from her injuries.
